Elvin Jones
September 9, 1927 - May 18, 2004
Elvin Jones is an innovator, distinctive, and one of the most influential drummers of our time.
You can hear him a mile away - a true original. I was lucky enough to see him play on many occassions and I listened to him on record countless times.
He is an influence and an inspiration - and a gentleman.
Thank you Elvin.

Anton's Celebrity Playlist on iTunes!
With all of the well-known artists Anton has played with over the years on The Late Show with David Letterman, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on recordings and on tour, one of the most frequently asked questions Anton hears is, "What music do you listen to?"
The folks at Apple's iTunes have asked Anton this question as well, and you can see his answers in the Celebrity Playlist which has been featured in the store. You'll need to have the iTunes application installed (it works on both Windows and Mac computers) and you can download it here:

Once you have iTunes installed, you can view the playlist, preview the songs and/or download them here:

Anton's "Tears" [featuring Chris Botti and Andy Snitzer] on Smooth Jazz Radio!
Smooth Jazz radio stations across America have started playing Anton's "Tears" featuring Chris Botti and Andy Snitzer. About the song, Anton writes, "Another Cape Town influenced song, this instrumental contains many powerful memories for me. I played a steady gig with Chris Botti [Sting], Andy Snitzer [Rolling Stones], and Chris Minh Doky [Trilok Gurtu] for about a year and got them on this track. Although Chris and Andy played separately, I tried to interweave the trumpet and sax as if they were together in the spirit of some classic jazz tracks of the late 50's. Chris Minh Doky plays the snarling organic bass underneath, Tony Cedras again provides that authentic Cape Town vibe."
"Tears" was one of the top 10 "Most Added" songs on Smooth Jazz Radio for the past two weeks.
You can read an interview Anton recently did on Jeff Charney's Contemporary Jazz Website.

MODERN
DRUMMER COVER STORY! [June 2002]
This
is my second cover for Modern Drummer - the first being
soon after I got the Letterman gig. As the premier drum
magazine I am honoured to be on the cover again. While this
is not a 'drum record' in terms of soloing, it is about
playing for a song and the experience of continuing the
song once you have put down the basic tracks. From overdubs
to mixing my work often began once the drum tracks were
there.
UPDATE:
On newsstands May 8, 2002! Read an excerpt here!
"If
you think you know what Anton is about from seeing him play
on TV, well, this record is going to totally blow your mind."

Tuesday, April 9 & 16
I'll be playing at the Metropolitan Café on 1st Ave
between 52 and 53. The 16th is the sixth year of Tuesday
night music at the place. Joe Caro on guitar and I started
playing there, along with Chris Botti, Andy Snitzer and
Chris Palmero - all on my album - originally for 3 weeks.
This turned into a 2 plus year gig every Tuesday. Now we
just play once in a while. There should be some surpise
guests but at this point it is a surprise to me as I don't
know what the set line up is yet.
Friday,
April 12 - 19
Recording with good friend Kevin Shirley producing. Kevin
has done Aerosmith [9 Lives], the new Journey record and
the Black Crowes with Jimmy Page among many others. I have
done many sessions for him and he mixed a couple of songs
on my album. The record is for Steve Lowe, a S.African artist
and Kevin is using Blondie Chaplin [guit], Keith Lentin
[bass], Adam Hozman [kbds], [all on my record], and good
friend and superb guitarist Pat Thrall as the band.
Tuesday,
April 30
I'll be playing at the Bitter End on Bleecker street with
Oz Noy - a great guitarist who plays on my album - and James
Genus on bass. This is Oz's music and is JazzFusionesque
- for want of a better and more accurate term. The gigs
are in preperation of a live recording we are going to do
next month. We play around midnight - one set.
