Anton - My son has just turned 13 and wants to learn drumming. I thought if you weren't doing anything for the next couple of years, you might like to come live with us here in Sacramento, just to get him started. Actually, seriously, I've run into a guy who gives drumming lessons. The only thing is, he's 22 and he wears wrist braces to his cashiering job because he's totally thrashed his wrists and thumbs drumming. I'm thinking maybe his technique is inferior, and I would like your input as a mature adult drummer whose parts all still seem to be intact. If good technique enables one to hold utensils at 40, where should one start in finding good instruction? I certainly don't want my son crippled and I wouldn't even be considering this kid except for the low low prices. Scott N. Concerned Dad and BIG Late Show Band Fan |

Sorry about that. Personally - I don't feel you should hurt yourself playing your instrument and there is something wrong if you do. Think of the sticks [or footpedals] in the same way as you would think of bouncing a basketball. You set it in motion and it automatically comes back. You have to use the bounce of the stick and not strongarm it all the time. You should strive to play relaxed. Drums are pretty athletic to play and the best spotsmen are always relaxed when they do their thing - so drums should be the same way. Try and find a teacher that thinks more in this vein. There are some good videos out. Dave Weckls' video called 'How to develope Technique' is very good on the correct hand motion for playing |
